The US witnessed the establishment of the first Bitcoin mining plant powered by nuclear energy, Geek Metaverse reported.

The plant, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, was set up by Cumulus Data, a subsidiary of Talen Energy. The data center, which is mining Bitcoin, is powered by Susquehanna nuclear power plant, which generates 2.5 gigawatts (GW).

According to Cumulus data, the 1200-acre campus will also provide cloud computing services.

In this regard, CEO of Cumulus Data Alex Hernandez said building this campus falls within a framework of the company’s keenness to meet the demand for carbon-free energy given that mining bitcoin requires enormous amounts of energy. Hernandez noted: “We look forward to advancing our mission to solve the energy ‘trilemma’ which we define as the rapidly increasing consumer demand for zero-carbon, low-cost, and reliable electricity by data center customers.”

He also welcomed all companies which are interested in doing business with his company, announcing the commencement of commercial operations this year.

Indeed, Nautilus Cryptomines is set to be the first crypto firm to benefit from Cumulus Data’s facilities to begin its bitcoin mining operations, saying the first 50 MW stage of the mining plant is predicted to be operational before the end of the first quarter of this year.

These efforts come after Bitcoin remained the most polluting cryptocurrency in 2022, according to a new report by Forex Suggest, the World’s Local Forex Platform. Titled “Global Impact of Crypto Trading,” the report, which measures the environmental impact of crypto in the last year, said around 86.3 million tons of CO2 emissions in 2022 were caused by Bitcoin, compared to 56.8 million tons in 2021, with an increase of 65%.

However, it is estimated that more than 55% of Bitcoin is mined using renewable energy.
