Meta is teaming up with 15 American universities to promote its metaverse concept.

The partnership aims to provide virtual reality (VR) classes and explore how immersive technologies, such as VR and augmented reality (AR), can enhance the future of education. The program will open up new learning opportunities with the potential for wider adoption.

According to Meta, the metaverse represents the next stage of internet evolution. It covers various technologies, such as VR headsets that transport users to new environments, AR glasses that project computer-generated images onto the real world, and mixed reality (MR) experiences that merge physical and virtual environments.

The company wants to expand the benefits of these technologies to more teachers and students. Therefore, they have launched a new partnership program for US college students to learn using VR as they start the new academic year.

Several prestigious universities, including Stanford University, Morehouse College, and the University of Iowa, offer Virtual Reality (VR) courses focusing on soft skills. These courses simulate real-life situations to provide practical training.

Moreover, some universities are exploring the application of VR in the nursing and surgical fields. Recently, a surgeon in China conducted a complex surgical operation from a remote location using a robotic system. Although this process did not use VR technology, it highlights the potential for VR to revolutionize remote medical procedures.

The Meta Quest platform already offers a range of educational apps, including STEM, history, and language-related experiences. The platform aims to expand its VR offerings to integrate the technology into more areas and make it more accessible to a wider audience.

According to a report from PwC, 40% of individuals who learn through VR feel more self-assured in utilizing the information they have acquired. Additionally, they are 150% more involved during their classes. Furthermore, a randomized control study of the VR mathematics program “Prisms” shows that students who learn through VR had test scores that were 11% higher than those in the control group.
