Meta announced that it had held a first-of-its-kind mixed reality event and captivating concert in Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos, in the presence of more than 300 creators and influencers.

In a statement, Meta said the event comes as a part of the Flex Naija campaign that aims to support African innovators and creators to express themselves in a new way. The event gathered Nigerian creators of art, music, tech, fashion, and comedy.

The event invited the audience to explore new technologies and multi-sensory experiences and inspired new people to join the metaverse world. It included an NFT gallery that displayed artworks of creators such as Odion Tobi, moyicii, Mayowa Alabi (Shutabug), Anthony Azekwoh, TSE STUDIO, and HADEEART.

The event had an avatar creation station, which educated the guests on creating and displaying a digital version of their most authentic selves, as well as a Meta Spark augmented reality (AR) space that let people explore and create AR filters and displays.

It witnessed a concert in which African musicians like Teni, Ayra Starr and Santi performed using custom AR filters.

Commenting on the event, Meta’s Director of EMEA Marketing Ineke Paulsen said the creator community in Africa, especially in Nigeria, is amazing to see, which attempts to have a global impact, adding such a community will make the metaverse more inclusive and inspiring in case of giving it latest technologies with limitless opportunities.

“Flex Naija is a celebration of how communities can push the boundaries of creativity and social connection physically and online. This campaign reinforces Meta’s commitment to supporting African innovators and creators in new ways to express themselves, and we’re excited to continue this journey in showcasing the power of collaboration in the metaverse,” Paulsen noted.

Meanwhile, Meta’s VP for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey Derya Matras asserted the importance of Africa for Meta, saying the company will continue its investments in the region to build technologies gathering families and friends and Flex Naija is a major step in the path.
