Siemens, the German multinational technology conglomerate, has partnered with Sony to create a new mixed-reality headset designed for professional designers and engineers.

The headset is expected to launch in 2024, and its focus will be on industrial applications rather than gaming.

Siemens CEO Roland Busch recently spoke to CNBC about the collaboration, explaining that the mixed-reality headset will be equipped with artificial intelligence and will aim to enhance productivity for creators and manufacturers. While the device will be complemented by Siemens’ software, including cut and 3D software, it is primarily designed for professional designers rather than for gamers.

“So, it’s [headset] really geared for the professional consumers, which are creators, engineers, mechanical engineers. And this hats in combination with a software, which we are offering: there are cut software, 3D software that makes big difference and can boost really productivity in the design and creativity in design, very much so. So it’s different from that what you see as a headset for gaming, for example,” Busch said.

Siemens has teamed up with NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services to create photorealistic images. The newly unveiled headset, which was showcased at CES in Las Vegas, is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and features Sony’s micro OLED displays with a 4K resolution per eye. It also comes with external accessories like a ring and stylus/pointer controllers for real-time interaction with digital objects.

While Siemens is new to the headset market, Sony has been actively involved in the metaverse industry for a while now. Sony has partnered with Google and Qualcomm to explore mixed reality and has also developed the PlayStation VR 2, a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5.

Sony’s collaboration with Siemens indicates their interest in fresh perspectives in technology, aligning with the growing interest of major industry players like Apple in the metaverse space.
